Chicago Marathon what!
I had three family members run in the Chicago Marathon yesterday. Well if you’ve read the news, you’ll know it was the first time ever they halted the event because of hot weather…What!?!?! Its been 80-90 degrees in the upper Midwest this week. That’s just unnatural.
A police officer from Midland, MI died due to heat and other complications:
Organizers halted the race after four hours and after at least 302 people were taken to Chicago-area hospitals because of heat-related ailments.
Schieber collapsed in the 18th mile of the race while running on the city’s south side. He was pronounced dead shortly before 2 p.m. at a Veteran’s Affairs hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. An autopsy was scheduled for today.
My family members are ok thankfully. But this is scary for a few reasons: (1) My mother is a runner and she usually does running events in warmer seasons (2) It’s scary when someone dies from physical exertion when he or she seems to be in great shape (3) This weather should not be happening in October in Illinois and surrounding areas…it just shouldn’t.
